I am a big fun of Splus, an excellent general purpose statistical software. Most of the time things go smoothly, until one runs over a speed bump. In January I received the upgrade disk for version 6.2, which I proceed to install without any problems. There was a letter with the CD asking me to immediately apply a patch that could be obtained from Insightful’s web site, which I tried to apply but it did not run in my computer. I contacted support and then received by email a patch that I needed to apply directly to my computer, just copying a few files. Then things started to go really wrong.
When trying to use trellis graphics, they would not work from the command line, but only from the menu. And then the program started to misbehave. The suggestion from support was to uninstall it and install it again, but there was a big BUT: the program would not let me to uninstall it. Today, after deleting files folder by folder, Anthony found the problem: a file called __objects was partly in a bad sector of my hard drive. After repairing the file, deleting some leftovers of the installation and deleting all version 6.2 entries in the registry (using Registry Commander, because regedit is disabled in my computer), I was ready to install the program again.
The installation went through without any problems. Installing the patch required to change the name of two rogue DLL files (located in C:WINNTsystem32): statrn32.dll and stadev32.dll. And finally, weeks after receiving the update disk, I am able to run 6.2.
