While I was looking for books to use in the Tree Breeding and Genetics course, I came across a reference to a 1979 paper by Cesare Marchetti entitled ‘Genetic engineering and the energy system: how to make ends meet’ (1.1 MB PDF). This is an interesting paper that loosely fits under the Forests and Society label. That is, how do people use (and interacts with) forests to satisfy a variety of needs. The paper was published in the journal Technological forecasting and social change, which seems to be quite interesting and general. This prompted other questions like:

  • How do environmental concerns affect forest use and the forrest industry?
    • Do additional regulatory frameworks and pressures actually achieve their aim?
    • How competitive is the forest sector at facing these regulations? Are other sectors coping in a better way?
  • Are the aims of conservation genetics policies actually of any use?
